چکیده

Before the turn of the twentieth century, eyes with retinal detachment (RD) were considered doomed. Contrary to other branches of ophthalmology, such as cataract extraction, the surgical treatment of retinal detachment was still in its infancy, and surgical success rates were less than five percent. From 1902 to 1921,Jules Gonin1 almost single handedly changed the landscape of retinal detachment surgery forever. He recognised that retinal break was the cause and not the consequence as it was largely believed at that time. He named the procedure ‘Ignipuncture’2, as he cauterized the retina through the sclera with a very hot pointed instrument.

Controversies in Vitreoretinal Surgery: is Scleral buckling an important Mainstay in the treatment of retinal detachment in 2014? Scleral Buckle for Retinal Detachment: Pro

By Gaurav K. Shah, MD; and Baseer Ahmad, MD Is scleral buckling surgery for retinal detachment (RD) repair here to stay? We believe the answer is “yes,” but only if ophthalmologists continue to perform and teach these procedures. If we do not, scleral buckling procedures will pass into history. There is no doubt that pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) is an effective procedure, valued day in and day o...

An intractable case of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection after scleral buckling for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment

BACKGROUND Scleral buckling is still a common procedure to repair rhematogenous retinal detachment, and acute or chronic infection of the scleral explant is rare. We report an intractable case of acute scleral explant infection by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. CASE A 36-year-old man suffered from acute scleral explant infection by P. aeruginosa forty-eight hours after scleral buckling for rhegmatog...

Anatomical and Visual Outcomes of Three Different Scleral Buckling Techniques

PURPOSE To compare the anatomical and visual outcomes of three different scleral buckling techniques and to explore the effect of cryotherapy and subretinal fluid drainage (SRFD) on outcomes of surgery. METHODS This retrospective study was performed on 111 eyes of 109 patients undergoing scleral buckling for rhegmatogenous retinal detachments (RRDs) by a single surgeon. Pre-, intra- and posto...

Major challenges in vitreoretinal surgery

Since the first vitrectomy surgery was used for treatment of vitreoretinal diseases, surgical techniques and instrumentation have been rapidly improved in the past decades. However, there are complicated vitreoretinal diseases that cannot be successfully treated, even with state-of-the-art surgeries. The outcomes of some complicated cases are still poor due to different reasons and debates stil...

A Case of Extrusion of a Solid Silicone Tire Migrating through the Superior Rectus Muscle with Aeromonas hydrophila Infection following a Scleral Buckling Procedure

To our knowledge, there are no reports of Aeromonas hydrophila infection after a scleral buckling procedure. Also, migration of a silicone explant element through the rectus muscles is extremely rare. Herein, we describe a case experiencing extrusion of a solid silicone tire migrating through the superior rectus muscle with Aeromonas hydrophila infection following a scleral buckling procedure. ...
